Environmental Info.
Oak, Ash and Thorn was an absolute joy to create. We wanted to honour its roots by making it (and all further decks) eco-friendly.
Our goal is to manage our little business in an environmentally responsible manner, which is why our practices and packaging are constantly evolving. We know we’re just a drop in the ocean, but we want to do our bit anyway.
ABOUT OUR PRINTER

Our Tarot decks are printed by the extraordinary Generation Press located in Brighton, England. There are so many things we LOVE about this company. Where do we begin?
-
They’re local to us (based in Brighton, England), which reduces our carbon footprint.

-
They have been previously EMAS certified since 2013-2018 (that’s the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, which allows all types of organisations to improve their environmental performance and achieve recognition for doing so).
-
They became a B Corp Certified Company in January 2022 with a whopping score of 119! B Corp Certification is a designation that a business is meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials.

-
They use their own generated solar power and are topped up with renewable energy supplied by Ecotricity, they’re carbon-neutral, they offer sustainable paper, and they use vegetable-based inks. We also love that they’ve funded the planting of 6518 trees since 2013.

-
They offer the Carbon Balanced Paper programme, enabling their customers to offset their emissions through The World Land Trust (an international conservation charity that protects the world’s most biologically significant and threatened habitats acre by acre).
-
They're a certified Living Wage Employer (achieved October 2020).

ABOUT OUR DECK

-
Cards: Printed on Gallerie Art Satin. Gallerie is made by an EMAS certified mill, and it is FSC certified.

-
Tuck box: As well as being fully recyclable and biodegradable, Colorplan paper has FSC certification. Additionally, it's Heavy Metal Free and the bleaching process avoids the use of harmful chlorine.

ABOUT OUR PACKAGING
We strive to use the most environmentally friendly packaging when sending out our products. This has led us to source alternatives to common packaging materials. We also reduce, reuse and recycle as much as we can.
-
Shipping boxes: Our boxes are made from sustainable materials, recyclable, naturally biodegradable, and plastic-free. While recycling might be necessary for boxes that can no longer be reused, we believe that prolonging the life of old boxes is important (cardboard boxes can be reused several times before they are eventually ready to be recycled). This means that some orders might be packed in a reused box (one of our favourite ways to package an order).

-
Tissue paper: Our tissue paper is sourced from a forest and supply chain that is managed responsibly and sustainably. It's printed with soy-based inks, acid-free, and Lignin and sulphur free (meaning that the ink won't transfer from the tissue and the paper won't leave behind any of these chemicals when decomposing).

-
Packaging stickers: They are both recycled and recyclable (so you can stick them in the recycling bin without worry).

-
Brown honeycomb wrapping paper: This is an excellent alternative to plastic bubble wrap. It’s fully recyclable, biodegradable, and plastic-free. If you find plastic bubble wrap in any of our packages it means we’re reusing old packing material to give it a second life.

-
Flexi-Hex: Flexi-Hex® is an innovative, protective packaging sleeve made from 100% recycled paper that helps protect fragile products in transit.

-
ZigZag shredded paper: Reusable, recyclable and biodegradable (and manufactured in the UK at a carbon neutral facility).
-
Packing peanuts: Sometimes, we use biodegradable loose-fill from Eco Flo® (which is manufactured in the UK and Europe from GM-free starch). It is 100% biodegradable, plastic-free, sustainable and entirely home compostable (EN13432), which is excellent for the environment! Please either reuse them, place them in your compost bin or dissolve the pieces in water and watch them magically disappear.

-
Corrugated cardboard inserts: Made of Kraft and Test card which means it can be widely recycled. Virgin Kraft paper (the strongest type of paper), is usually used as the outside liner, and Test paper (a recycled paper), is usually used as the inside liner.

-
Packing tape: Our tape is recyclable and complies with the European 2004/12/CE packaging directive. It’s a great alternative to the conventional plastic-based tape made from fossil fuels and harmful chemicals. The only time you’ll find plastic packing tape on one of our packages is when we’re reusing an old box.
ABOUT OUR SUPPLIERS

To keep our supply chain as earth-friendly as possible, we choose to work with suppliers who have the same ethos as us when it comes to sustainability, and we try to choose local suppliers wherever we can.
