Environment

Oak, Ash and Thorn was an absolute joy to create. We wanted to honour its roots by making it (and all further decks) eco-friendly.
Our goal is to manage our little business in an environmentally responsible manner, so our practices are constantly evolving. We know we’re just a drop in the ocean, but we want to do our bit anyway.
About our printer

Our Tarot decks are printed by the extraordinary Generation Press located in Brighton, England. There are so many things we LOVE about this company. Where do we begin?
-
They’re local to us, helping reduce our carbon footprint.

-
They have been previously EMAS certified since 2013-2018 (that’s the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, which allows all types of organisations to improve their environmental performance and achieve recognition for doing so).
-
They became B Corp Certified in January 2022, scoring an impressive 119! B Corp Certification is a designation that a business is meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials.

-
They use their own generated solar power and are topped up with renewable energy supplied by Ecotricity, they’re carbon-neutral, they offer sustainable paper, and they use vegetable-based inks. We also love that they’ve funded the planting of 7179 trees since 2013.

-
They offer the Carbon Balanced Paper programme, enabling customers to offset emissions via the World Land Trust (an international conservation charity that protects the world’s most biologically significant and threatened habitats acre by acre).
-
They're also a Living Wage Employer (since October 2020).

About our decks

-
Cards: Printed on Gallerie Art Satin, made by an EMAS-certified mill and FSC certified.

-
Tuck box: Made from Colorplan paper, which is fully recyclable, biodegradable, and FSC certified. It's also free of heavy metals and processed without harmful chlorine.

About our packaging
We’re committed to using the most environmentally friendly packaging options we can find. That means constantly reviewing and improving our materials—and reusing wherever possible.
-
Shipping boxes: Our boxes are made from sustainable materials, recyclable, naturally biodegradable, and plastic-free. While recycling might be necessary for boxes that can no longer be reused, we believe that prolonging the life of old boxes is important (cardboard boxes can be reused several times before they are eventually ready to be recycled). This means that some orders might be packed in a reused box (one of our favourite ways to package an order).

-
Packing tape: Our tape is recyclable and complies with the European 2004/12/CE packaging directive. It’s a great alternative to the conventional plastic-based tape made from fossil fuels and harmful chemicals. The only time you’ll find plastic packing tape on one of our packages is when we’re reusing an old box.

-
Tissue paper: 100% recycled, acid free, recyclable, biodegradable, compostable and made in GB.

A variety of void fill options may be used, including...

-
Brown honeycomb wrapping paper: This is an excellent alternative to plastic bubble wrap. It’s fully recyclable, biodegradable, and plastic-free. If you find plastic bubble wrap in any of our packages it means we’re reusing old packing material to give it a second life.

-
Flexi-Hex®: A protective sleeve made from 100% recycled paper—perfect for fragile products in transit.

-
ZigZag shredded paper: Reusable, recyclable, biodegradable, and manufactured in the UK at a carbon neutral facility.
-
Eco Flo® loose-fill: Manufactured in the UK and Europe from GM-free starch. It is 100% biodegradable, plastic-free, sustainable and entirely home compostable (EN13432), which is excellent for the environment! Please either reuse them, place them in your compost bin or dissolve the pieces in water and watch them magically disappear.

-
Pelaspan S shape loose-fill: Made from recycled expanded polystyrene. 100% recyclable and manufactured without CFC's.

-
Corrugated cardboard inserts: Made of Kraft and Test card which means it can be widely recycled. Virgin Kraft paper (the strongest type of paper), is usually used as the outside liner, and Test paper (a recycled paper), is usually used as the inside liner.
About our suppliers

To keep our supply chain as green as possible, we prioritise working with suppliers who share our sustainability values, and we try to choose local suppliers wherever we can.
